What ๐ means
**Usually โno sound hereโ; aimed at a person, โbe quiet.โ
Most of the time ๐ is a plain status report. Posted with a video it warns โno audioโ or โwatch on muteโ; paired with its opposite it labels the two states (โsound on / sound off ๐โ). With a phone it means โIโm on silent, text meโ; with a meeting or a library it means the place is quiet.
The second big use comes from social media, where muting a person, group or thread means you stop seeing their posts or getting their notifications without blocking them. โThat group chat is ๐ until the weekendโ or โmuted him ๐โ uses the emoji as shorthand for that button. It is milder than blocking, but telling someone they are muted still stings.
Pointed at a person rather than a device, ๐ becomes a request or an order: a gentle โkeep it down, the babyโs asleepโ when the words around it are friendly, a cold โstop talkingโ when it arrives alone in a tense exchange. The emoji itself is neutral; the tone comes entirely from where it lands.
Speaker muted or microphone muted?
It shows a speaker, so strictly it means output is off.
The picture is a loudspeaker, the thing that plays sound, not a microphone, the thing that captures it. On a call, โmy speaker is mutedโ means you canโt hear them, and โmy mic is mutedโ means they canโt hear you; both get described with ๐ because there is no muted-microphone emoji. If it matters, add the words: โcanโt hear you ๐โ or โmic off ๐, give me a second.โ
The design copies a decades-old interface convention. Volume controls show a speaker with one, two or three sound waves for low, medium and high, and a speaker with an X or a slash for mute. Unicode encoded the whole set together, and this one was originally named โspeaker with cancellation stroke,โ which is why some platforms draw the X beside the speaker and others strike through it. Either way it reads as mute.
Neutral and practical when it describes a device or video; curt to rude the moment it is aimed at a person.
A lone ๐ as a reply reads as โshut up,โ even if you only meant your sound was off.

7Worth knowing
- Its original Unicode name was โspeaker with cancellation stroke.โ It was renamed โmuted speakerโ for the emoji lists, which is why older keyboards and fonts still show the longer name.
- Unicode encoded the whole volume control at once: one speaker silent, then one, two and three sound waves, exactly as the slider icon on a TV or laptop.
Questions people ask
4Does sending ๐ mute a chat or my microphone?
No. In a message it is just a picture. To mute a chat, call or microphone you need the appโs own mute control; the emoji only tells the other person what you did or want.
Is ๐ rude?
It can be. Describing a video or your phone, it is perfectly neutral. Sent alone in reply to someone talking, it means โshut upโ or โIโm not listening,โ and most people take it that way.
Whatโs the difference between ๐ and ?
๐ is a speaker with sound off; is a bell with notifications off. In practice people use either for โon silent,โ but points at alerts and ๐ at all audio.
Can ๐ mean my microphone is muted?
People use it that way, but the picture is a speaker, so it strictly means you canโt hear, not that you canโt be heard. Add a word or two on calls so the other person knows which.
