What 🕨 means
The right-hand speaker or channel of stereo sound. Stereo plays two channels, left and right, through two speakers so music and film have a sense of space. 🕨 marks the right one, the way an R does on a cable or headphone. Its siblings and add one and three sound waves, giving a right-side speaker that is playing quietly or loudly.
It entered Unicode in 2014 with a batch of symbols meant to keep pictograms from Japanese mobile phones and other symbol sets intact when text moved between systems; a 2009 compatibility proposal linked it to KDDI pictogram #499 and SoftBank pictogram #424.
Someone sent me 🕨 — what do they mean?
Probably just "sound" or "speaker", as a small decoration. People mostly pick it from a symbol list as a speaker icon, for example next to a song title or "turn the sound on". If they meant the right channel, the words around it will say so. If you only see a box, ask them to describe it: your font has no drawing for it.
Neutral and technical; reads as an icon or label, not as an emotional reaction.
With no waves it does not mean muted or silent; that is .

2Why does 🕨 show as a box?
Because your font has no drawing for it. The character is still in the text; a font with wide symbol coverage displays it.
Is 🕨 an emoji?
No. As of 2026 it is a plain text symbol outside the emoji set, so phone emoji keyboards don't offer it.
