Accordion

4/13

🪗 is an accordion, the hand-held instrument with a bellows you squeeze and a keyboard or buttons on each side. Some people call it a squeezebox. It stands for accordion music and everything people connect with it: polka, tango, French café tunes, folk and dance bands. Sent on its own it is often a lighthearted nod to that old-world, slightly comic sound.

What 🪗 means

A squeezable box that plays by pushing air through metal reeds. The accordion has two end boxes joined by a folding bellows. The player pulls and pushes the bellows with both hands while pressing piano keys on one side (a piano accordion) or rows of buttons (a button accordion); the right hand plays the melody, the left hand buttons give bass notes and chords. Most emoji designs draw the piano-key version in red or black with the bellows pleats clearly visible.

It is a 19th-century European invention that travelled with emigrants and settled into dance music in many countries: polka and waltzes in Central Europe, musette in France, tango in Argentina (on its close cousin the bandoneon), norteño and Tejano on the US–Mexico border, forró in Brazil, Cajun and zydeco in Louisiana, klezmer and Russian folk. Many of those traditions play a button accordion rather than the piano-key model on your screen. Because it is loud, portable and plays its own accompaniment, it was the one-person band of street corners and village weddings long before amplifiers.

What does it mean when someone sends 🪗?

Usually: accordion music, or the mood that comes with it. A player, a parent of a learner or a folk-festival fan sends it literally: lesson tonight, gig on Saturday, look what I bought. Many other senders use it as atmosphere. It is a common shorthand for Oktoberfest and beer-tent polka, a Paris street scene, a tango night, a sea shanty or a "grandpa's music" joke.

That last reading is the only one worth watching. In some countries the accordion has a reputation as the uncool instrument, so 🪗 after someone's song choice can be gentle mockery: "that's so old-fashioned". It is also occasionally sent for no reason at all, as a random funny object, like or . If the message gives no musical cue, read it as a joke, not an insult.

Warm and playful, with a nostalgic, slightly comic tone; fine for family chats and public posts.

Sent alone after someone's music pick it can read as mocking their taste.

Worth knowing

  • The name is older than you might think: Viennese instrument maker Cyrill Demian patented an "Accordion" in 1829, named after the chords its buttons played. It looked quite different from today's instrument.
  • The accordion is a free-reed instrument, the same family as the harmonica: both sound when air moves a thin metal tongue, one by breath, the other by bellows.

Questions people ask

3

Is the accordion emoji the same as a concertina or bandoneon?

No, but it is the closest emoji for both. Concertinas are small and often hexagonal, the bandoneon is the boxy tango instrument; neither has its own emoji, so 🪗 covers them.

Why do I see a blank box instead of the accordion?

Your device or app doesn't support it. The emoji arrived in 2020 and systems added it at different times (iPhone in late 2020); one that missed that update shows a box.

Does 🪗 have a hidden or slang meaning?

Not an established one. It is sometimes sent as a random joke object or to tease old-fashioned taste, but there is no widely recognized coded meaning.
