flag: South Korea

๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท is the flag of South Korea, the Taegukgi: a red-and-blue circle with four sets of black bars on white. People send it for anything Korean, from a trip to Seoul to K-pop, Korean food and the national team, and put it in profiles to show Korean roots or love for the country. It is not North Korea's flag; that one is .

What ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท means

Something here is Korean: the place, the food, the music or the person.

Next to a flight or a hotel photo it names the destination. Next to a bowl of kimchi stew, a language-learning streak or a song it says the thing is Korean. Fans of K-pop and Korean dramas use it freely, often beside their favourite group's name or a heart, and nobody reads that as a claim to be Korean. During the World Cup, the Olympics or a big baseball game it stands for the South Korean side and, with cheering words, becomes support.

In a bio or username it usually marks a personal tie: born there, Korean family, living in Korea, or simply devoted to its culture. Two flags side by side often mean dual heritage or two homes. The surrounding words tell you which, so don't assume citizenship from the flag alone.

One thing it never means is North Korea or the Korean peninsula as a whole. North Korea has its own flag, , with a red star, and using the two interchangeably is a real mistake in any political or news post.

What do the circle and the black bars stand for?

Balance: the circle is yin and yang, the bars are heaven, earth, water and fire.

The flag's Korean name, Taegukgi, means "taegeuk flag". The taegeuk is the red-and-blue circle in the middle, Korea's version of the yin-yang symbol: red on top for yang, the active, bright force, and blue below for yin, the receptive, dark one, curled into each other to show that opposites depend on each other.

The four black figures in the corners are trigrams, three-bar symbols from the ancient Chinese Book of Changes in which a solid bar is yang and a broken bar is yin. On this flag they are geon for heaven, gon for earth, gam for water and ri for fire, and together they stand for the whole of nature in motion. The white background is read as peace and purity, and white has long been the colour of traditional Korean dress.

The design dates from the 1880s, when the Joseon kingdom first needed a national flag for diplomacy; the diplomat Park Yeong-hyo is usually credited with the version flown in 1882. The Republic of Korea fixed the exact proportions and colours in 1949, and that standard is the flag the emoji shows.

Neutral and friendly almost everywhere: a label in travel and food posts, warm pride in profiles, loud but harmless in sports chatter.

It is South Korea's flag only. Using it for North Korea, or for the South, is a real error.

Worth knowing

  • KR is South Korea's two-letter country code, the same one in .kr web addresses, and the emoji is literally the letters K and R, which is why some screens show "KR" instead of a flag.
  • Koreans hang the Taegukgi at home on national days such as March 1, which marks the 1919 independence movement, and August 15, Liberation Day; the flag emoji fills social feeds on those dates.

Questions people ask

3

Why do I see KR instead of the flag?

Your app or system has no flag artwork. Flag emoji are two letters that programs draw as a flag; Windows and some older apps show the letters instead. The meaning is unchanged, and other people usually see the flag.

Is ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท the flag of all Korea?

No. It is the flag of South Korea (the Republic of Korea). North Korea uses . There is no emoji for a single united Korea; sports teams competing jointly have used a separate blue-peninsula flag that has no emoji.

Can I use it if I'm not Korean?

Yes. Fans of K-pop, Korean food and dramas use it constantly, and Koreans don't read it as a claim of nationality. Just avoid it as a stand-in for North Korea or for political points you don't mean.
