What ㅑ means
It represents the Korean vowel sound /ya/.
In a Hangul syllable block, ㅑ is the medial vowel, placed after the initial consonant. Its shape builds on ㅏ, the vowel read as “a,” by adding a second short stroke for the y sound. ㅕ follows the same pattern from ㅓ. On a Dubeolsik keyboard, the QWERTY I key enters ㅑ.
Modern Korean writes this vowel inside a syllable block: ㅇ ㅑ forms 야, and a pronounced initial consonant takes the same block with it. Hangul developed as a writing system for Korean speech, which Chinese characters did not represent as directly. Its first record, Hunminjeongeum, dates to 1443; an explanatory book of the same name appeared in 1446 and described how the letters are formed and arranged as initial, medial, and final parts of a syllable. The older vowel dot ㆍ is not used in current modern Korean, but ㅑ remains in the vowel set.
In Korean writing, ㅑ is a vowel letter.
Alone, ㅑ is a vowel component, not a complete Korean syllable.

ㅑ\3151Why is ㅑ a box on my screen?
fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
