Trigram for Heaven

31/173

☰ is the trigram for Heaven, called Qián in Chinese: three unbroken lines, one of the eight bagua signs behind the I Ching and feng shui. On screens you'll usually meet it as the three-line "hamburger" menu button on websites and apps, where it simply means "open the menu". It also sits in the top-left corner of the South Korean flag.

What ☰ means

On a screen it opens the menu; by name it is the Heaven trigram. The three stacked bars are the "hamburger" icon, so called because they look like a bun, a patty and a bun. On phones and narrow screens it marks the button that hides the site's or app's navigation. Usually that button is a drawn icon, but some sites drop in the text character ☰ instead, which is how the symbol ends up copied into messages and searches. There is nothing mystical about it there: tap it and the menu opens.

By its official name, ☰ is something much older. The bagua are eight signs made of three lines each, every line either unbroken (yang, active) or broken (yin, receptive). ☰ is the only one with three unbroken lines, so it is pure yang: Qián (乾), Heaven. In the I Ching, the Chinese Book of Changes, which began as an ancient divination manual and became a philosophical classic, it stands for the sky, the creative force, strength, the father and the head. Doubled, it forms hexagram 1 , "The Creative", the first of the book's sixty-four six-line figures. Feng shui's compass arrangement places it in the northwest.

It is also a national symbol. The South Korean flag puts four trigrams around the red-and-blue taeguk circle, and ☰, read geon in Korean, holds the top-left corner, standing for heaven. Many Koreans know this character from the flag long before they meet it as a menu.

What does it mean if someone sends ☰?

Usually a pointer to a menu; among I Ching fans, Heaven and strength. "Tap ☰ in the corner" is a common way to steer someone to a hidden menu in a chat or a support message. In a conversation about divination, feng shui or Taoist ideas, ☰ is the Heaven sign, often paired with Earth to mean the whole cosmos or the male and female principles. It has no set emotional tone; it is not an emoji and has no standard coloured artwork, just the lines your font draws.

A plain functional symbol on screens; calm and classical in I Ching and feng shui talk.

Don't treat as the same character: it is the maths sign "identical to". The menu bars may look alike, but ☰ is the trigram.

Worth knowing

  • Norm Cox drew the three-line menu icon for the Xerox Star computer in 1981, decades before smartphones. He meant the bars as a list of menu items; the "hamburger" nickname came later.
  • The character 乾 for this trigram is read qián, but the same character means "dry" and is then read gān, a double reading worth knowing for learners of Chinese.

Questions people ask

4

Is ☰ the hamburger menu icon?

In practice, often. The character is officially a trigram, but some websites use it as a text version of the three-line menu button, and on a screen it is widely recognized that way.

Can I use ☰ as the menu button on my site?

Yes, many sites do. It needs no image file, but line thickness and spacing change with the visitor's font, so a drawn SVG icon looks more consistent across devices.

Is ☰ a Chinese character?

No. It is a symbol; the Chinese character for its name is 乾 (qián). The three-stroke character 三 means "three" and is a different thing.

What does ☰ mean in feng shui?

In the compass-based Later Heaven arrangement, the northwest of a home, linked to the father or head of the household, the head and metal. Some Western schools orient the map to the front door and link the area to helpful people and travel.

Why is ☰ a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
