What ☭ means
It represents worker-peasant solidarity under communism.
Artist Yevgeny Kamzolkin designed the crossed emblem in April 1918 to decorate Moscow's May Day celebrations. Earlier revolutionary designs paired a hammer with a plough; swapping the plough for a handheld sickle joined the urban factory laborer directly to the agricultural fieldworker.
In July 1918, Soviet Russia incorporated the crossed tools into its official coat of arms. The Soviet Union adopted them nationwide in 1922 and placed them onto the Soviet red flag and state seal in 1924, after which communist parties across the globe adopted the motif.
Why is the hammer and sickle controversial?
It joins working-class solidarity to Soviet state repression.
For socialist movements, ☭ remains a historic emblem of labor organizing and communist identity. For millions whose families endured Soviet occupation, forced collectivization, the Gulag system, or post-war purges, it represents totalitarian oppression and state violence.
The symbol also appears in modern art and political commentary without ideological endorsement. In 1976–1977, Andy Warhol produced screenprints of the motif as pop art, detaching the graphic from Soviet governance while preserving its charged political charge.
What does ☭ mean when someone sends it to you?
It names communism or Soviet history; surrounding words show the stance.
Sent on its own, ☭ flags the general topic without disclosing whether the sender is endorsing revolutionary politics, mourning Soviet history, debating foreign affairs, or trolling. Look at the surrounding context: beside a party slogan it signals support, in a museum or book post it acts as a citation, and in an argument it often serves as shorthand for state overreach.
A politically charged emblem read as labor solidarity by some and totalitarian terror by others.
Public display faces statutory restrictions with fine liability in countries like Latvia, Lithuania, and Ukraine.

3Questions people ask
3Is using the hammer and sickle offensive?
It often is. Many communities across Eastern Europe and former Soviet territories connect it directly to state terror, mass deportations, and dictatorship. Make your academic, historical, or satirical context explicit.
Why does ☭ display as an empty rectangle?
Your device font lacks the character glyph. Unicode recognizes U262D as a standard text symbol, but older or minimal system fonts substitute a square replacement box.
Does Austria use the same crossed symbol?
No. Austria's national coat of arms shows an eagle grasping a separate sickle and hammer in its talons, representing farmers and workers, but the tools are uncrossed.
