What ࿖ means
In Bon, ࿖ marks enduring sacred order and the enlightened mind.
The sign belongs to an old family of hooked-cross designs: the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's 2025 overview describes related Eurasian motifs as far back as 7,000 years ago. Those finds are not this exact Tibetan character. In Upper Tibet, rock carvings show the sign among cosmic imagery such as the sun and moon; written Tibetan uses of yungdrung are recorded around 650–850 CE in manuscripts and pillar inscriptions.
In Bon, yungdrung means “eternal” or “undying” and names the Tibetan religious tradition. The left-turning sign can refer to the enlightened mind, imperishability, ritual protection, funerary paths, and offerings. Tibetan Buddhist art also uses svastikas as auspicious signs, but the left-facing direction does not mark one Buddhist affiliation as specifically as it can in Bon.
Why can this symbol feel offensive?
In many Western settings, it can be read as Nazi signaling.
The Nazi Party adopted the swastika in 1920 and made it an emblem of racial ideology, antisemitism, and persecution, culminating in the Holocaust.
That appropriation does not erase living Tibetan and Bon meanings, and those older meanings do not cancel the Nazi association. In a Western-facing message, name the Tibetan or Bon context; an unexplained swastika can cause real alarm.
Does direction matter in Tibetan use?
In Tibetan Bon contexts, left-facing direction can signal tradition.
Bon sources distinguish ࿖ from the right-facing Tibetan counterpart ࿕, and that distinction can mark Bon affiliation. Tibetan Buddhist use is less consistently directional, so the surrounding image or text gives more context.
The sign's Tibetan record spans rock carvings, manuscripts, pillar inscriptions, clothing, tools, carpets, ritual offerings, and religious sculpture.
Use it in clearly Tibetan, Bon, or historical contexts; unexplained Western use risks Nazi or extremist readings.
In a Western-facing message, an unexplained swastika can look like Nazi or extremist signaling.

1Why does ࿖ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
