Trigram for Lake

It is Dui, the lake or marsh trigram.

In the Yijing’s eight-trigram bagua, ☱ also carries ideas of openness and pleasure, with associations to the mouth and speech. These are symbolic correspondences, not a literal landscape; later interpreters grouped each trigram with additional ideas.

The familiar circular bagua sequences are not one timeless chart. Major systematization of those sequences is associated with the Song dynasty (960–1279), while earlier divination materials preserve other arrangements and methods.

Why does ☱ appear in I Ching diagrams?

It is one building block in a divination system.

The Shifa bamboo manuscript, rediscovered in 2008, records divination from China’s Warring States period using numerical strokes and four trigrams. Its notation differs from the familiar solid-and-broken line icons, so it does not show that this exact drawn form was already in use.

Two trigrams can be stacked to make a six-line hexagram. ☱ contributes its position and associations to that larger reading; it does not simply mean “lake” regardless of what surrounds it.

What does ☱ mean when someone sends it?

Without context, ☱ is ambiguous specialist notation.

In an I Ching note, it identifies Dui; in a bagua or feng shui diagram, it marks one trigram in the arrangement being used. Sent alone, it may look like unexplained notation to someone unfamiliar with those systems.

Fonts may draw the lines with different weight or spacing. Those visual variations do not turn ☱ into another trigram.
