Three

10/20992

三 means three. It appears in ordinary number writing and in compounds and ceremonies across Chinese, Japanese, and Korean contexts. Japanese also reads it as mi, mitsu, or mittsu; in a set phrase, the whole expression can carry more than a literal count.

What 三 means

三 is the written number three. In Mandarin Chinese it is read sān. Japanese uses it as a kanji, a Chinese character used in Japanese writing, with readings such as san, mi, mitsu, and mittsu. Korean also uses it as hanja, a Chinese character used in Korean. The language changes the reading, not the number.

In Japanese compounds, 三 can indicate three occurrences or repeated action rather than three separate objects. Read that sense from the whole word, not from 三 alone.

Where does 三 come from?

三 appears as a numeral in the Shang period. Later records include bronze inscriptions, manuscripts from the ancient state of Chu, small-seal writing (an early standardized script), and regular script. Historical explanations connect its three horizontal strokes with counting rods; another traditional analysis reads the form as three copies of 一.

The Japanese katakana sign ミ, one of the syllable signs used in Japanese writing, developed from a cursive form of 三.

What does 三 mean in a message?

Start with “three,” then check the surrounding words. A reply to a quantity question is straightforward. In the Chinese idiom 三人成虎, repeated reports make a false rumor seem believable; that meaning belongs to the whole idiom. If a standalone 三 does not fit the conversation, ask what the sender meant rather than guessing a cultural signal.

As of 2026, Japanese customs give three a more specific setting. 七五三 is a children's celebration associated with the lucky odd ages three, five, and seven. 三三九度 is a ceremonial Japanese rice-wine rite, especially associated with weddings: three cups are taken in three rounds, making nine. These readings belong to named customs; a standalone 三 still defaults to the number.

Questions people ask

1

Is 三 Chinese or Japanese?

Both, and Korean writing uses it as hanja too. It is a Chinese character; Japanese calls such characters kanji and Korean calls them hanja. The glyph alone does not identify which language is in use.
