What 上 means
Its core idea is “above.” Oracle-bone inscriptions—writing carved into bone—from about 1200–1050 BCE show a short mark above a baseline. The modern character evolved from this sign for position.
Chinese shang and Japanese ue are pronunciations of 上. Japanese and Korean compound words also use it for “upper” or “superior.”
Neutral writing, not an emotional reaction symbol.
Do not translate every 上 as “up.”
