What ⺆ means
It is the index form linked to 冂. A radical helps file Chinese characters: ⺆ is the supplement form for radical 13, while ⼌ is the older Kangxi-list form and 冂 is the ideograph.
The earliest known form of 冂 appears on late Shang bronzes. Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, describes it as a distant boundary beyond a city, fields, and forest.
