What ⼌ means
⼌ is the index label for the Chinese component 冂.
The Eastern Han dictionary Shuowen Jiezi explains 冂 as a far boundary beyond the city, suburbs, wilderness and forest; other dictionary glosses include “far” and “empty.”
The eighteenth-century Kangxi dictionary tradition filed characters by radical and then by remaining strokes. Unicode pairs ⼌ with 冂, but they are distinct: ⼌ labels the radical entry; 冂 is the ideograph.
A specialist symbol for indexing Chinese characters by component.
Write 冂 when you mean the ideograph; ⼌ marks its radical entry.
