What ⼊ means
It marks the “enter” radical in Han-character dictionaries.
A radical is the part of a Han character that a dictionary uses to file it. The eighteenth-century Kangxi dictionary includes ⼊ among its 214 radicals.
Early Chinese writing traditions record the older 入 in divination inscriptions on bones, bronze inscriptions, manuscripts from the ancient state of Chu written on bamboo slips and silk, small-seal script, and Shuowen Jiezi, an early character dictionary. The wider surviving Chinese writing record begins in Late Shang, around 1250–1046 BCE.

1Why does ⼊ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
