bowl with spoon

Bowl with Spoon

29/34

🥣 is a bowl of food you eat with a spoon. It was added as the cereal emoji, and people use it just as readily for oatmeal, porridge, congee and soup. The drawing differs from phone to phone, so the words beside it tell you which dish is meant.

EmojiSince 2017

What 🥣 means

Whatever the sender means: the bowl is deliberately vague.

The proposal that got it added pitched it as a breakfast-cereal bowl that could also stand for oatmeal, muesli, granola and congee. Congee is rice porridge, made by simmering rice in plenty of water until it breaks down, eaten across East and Southeast Asia for breakfast and as the classic food for someone who is unwell. In everyday chat the emoji also stands in for soup, stew, dal, chilli or anything else you spoon from a bowl.

Each phone maker draws its own version. As of 2026 some show an empty bowl with a spoon resting in it, others soup or cereal in milk, so the person you message may picture a different dish than you do. If the dish matters, name it.

It is the only emoji that means breakfast cereal, and together with one of two that people use for soup: is a cooking pot, 🥣 is the serving bowl you actually eat from.

What does it mean when someone sends 🥣?

Usually a meal: what they are eating, or an invitation to eat.

Next to in the morning it most likely means breakfast; in talk about dinner, soup. Sent to someone who is ill, it is a caring nudge to eat something warm, which many English speakers picture as chicken soup and many East Asian readers as rice porridge. It is a literal food emoji with no widely known second meaning, so there is nothing to read into it beyond the meal.

Casual, warm and literal; at home in food chat, recipes and get-well messages.

Name the dish if it matters: your soup may look like cereal on their phone.
