Eight-pointed rectilinear star

A decorative star, not a fixed emotional signal.

In text, ✷ can set off a word or decorate a heading or short line. By itself, it does not reliably identify the writer’s emotion; the surrounding message carries that reading.

The eight-pointed outline has no universal cultural meaning: related-looking stars in religious designs, book decoration, and Latvian art serve different purposes.

Where did the eight-pointed star appear?

The shape predates this text character. A Qur’an manuscript from the early eighth century uses an eight-pointed star as page ornament; a Western manuscript from the late eighth century uses a blooming eight-pointed star to mark a quire, a folded set of pages prepared for binding.

A study also connects an eight-pointed star on a decorated opening page around 512 with later manuscript design, but considers direct transmission unlikely.

Why does it carry different meanings in Latvia?

In Latvia, the star’s readings expanded during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Artists presented it as a Latvian ornament, a sign tied to ancient ritual, a marker of national style, and a patriotic emblem.

These readings belong to particular Latvian artworks and settings. They do not make every eight-pointed star a Latvian symbol.
