What 👯 means
A fun duo — dancing, celebrating, or twinning. Send the little dancers when you and your bestie match, move and pose as a unit; for partying alone, a solo dancer fits better.
The costume started as a work uniform: Chicago's first Playboy Club opened in 1960 with “Bunny” hostesses serving drinks to male members. Japan adopted the look for club and bar hostesses; a Japanese dictionary cites the term “bunny girl” in a 1966 novel, and the outfit later became a recurring costume in anime and manga.
Before 👯 was one Unicode character, two Japanese phone carriers matched up their own pictures: KDDI's bunny-eared woman's head and SoftBank's animated line of dancers. Together they meant a showgirl, which is why the emoji mixes costume and dance.
Why did old 👯 look like ballerinas?
Apple's first bunny ears were tiny.
Many viewers read the pair as ballerinas in headbands. With iOS 8.3 in 2015, Apple drew the ears roughly 200% bigger so the bunny finally read as a bunny, and some users then called the design sexist.
Playful and social — a duo/bestie signal, not a private mood emoji.
Its Playboy-bunny roots read as adult or sexist to some; skip it with your boss.

Questions people ask
2Is 👯 offensive or NSFW?
It can read that way. Some users call it sexist because of the Playboy costume, so keep it for casual friend chats.
Is 👯 only for girls?
No. The base emoji has a gender-neutral name, though many platforms still draw two women; man and woman versions exist too, so guys or mixed friend groups can use it.
