🟩

green square

Green Square

🟩 is a plain green square. Most people meet it in rows of green, yellow and grey tiles: a shared Wordle result, where each green square is a letter in exactly the right spot. On its own it just means green, and in lists it can mark something as fine or done. It is not a built-in yes.

What 🟩 means

A green block; in tile grids, a correctly placed Wordle letter. Wordle is a free daily word game: you get six tries to guess a five-letter word. After each guess, a letter turns green if it is right and in the right spot, yellow if it is in the word but elsewhere, and grey if it is not in the word (or is an extra copy of a letter the word has fewer of). The share button hides your letters and posts the puzzle number, your score and the grid of coloured tiles, so friends see how you did without the answer. Read it top to bottom: each row is one guess, and a final row of five green squares means solved.

Away from the game, green keeps its everyday sense of good, go or done. People mark items in lists with 🟩, 🟨 and 🟥 like a traffic light, or use the square as a simple swatch when talking about something green. The coloured squares have no fixed meaning of their own, so the surrounding message decides.

Does 🟩 mean yes when someone sends it?

Not by itself; it means green, not approval. A lone 🟩 has no agreed reply meaning. In a group that already uses it for "done" or "available" it can work as a yes, but most people who want to agree send ✅ or 👍. If someone answers your question with nothing but a green square, it is fair to ask what they meant.

Neutral, with no emotional tone of its own: a colour, a scorecard tile or a status marker.

Reading a lone 🟩 as a yes when the sender only meant the colour.

Worth knowing

  • Wordle's share grid was inspired by one early player in New Zealand who typed out results as coloured squares by hand; the creator added a share button in December 2021 and the grids spread fast.

Questions people ask

2

What do numbers like 3/6 mean next to the squares?

How many of the six guesses it took. 3/6 means solved on the third try; X/6 means the word was not found.

Why are my Wordle squares orange and blue instead of green and yellow?

High-contrast mode. Switched on in the game's settings for colour-blind players, it shows orange for a correct spot and blue for a misplaced letter; the meanings stay the same.
