What ⬜ means
Not affection, anger, or agreement on its own. A blank square gives you little to go on, so read the surrounding conversation to judge the sender’s tone, not the tile alone. If it arrives in rows of five next to 🟩 and 🟨, you are looking at a Wordle or Wordle-style result: each row is one guess, and each white square is a letter that found no match.
More layout than feeling.
A lone square is not a clear emotional reply.

2Worth knowing
- The characters behind ⬜ existed in Unicode 2 years before anyone was allowed to draw them in colour: Unicode 5.1 in 2008, emoji presentation in 2010.
- ⬜ is a single code point, so it survives copying through almost anything — old databases, SMS gateways, printer drivers.
Questions people ask
2What does ⬜ mean in Wordle?
A miss. In a shared Wordle grid played in light mode, ⬜ marks a letter with no match in the answer, including an extra copy of a repeated letter; dark mode shows ⬛ instead.
Why does the white square look different on my device?
Rendering varies. Fonts and text-versus-emoji presentation can change its outline, shading, and size; some emoji sets draw it light gray so it still stands out against a white background.
How to type ⬜
:white_large_square:the common shortcode; support varies by platform.⬜Codes and encoding1 code points
A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
