What 🟗 means
It identifies stones to compare or discuss. Go is a strategy game in which two players place black and white stones on a grid to surround territory. Diagrams show positions on the board; marks on the stones help an explanation point to particular stones or groups.
The circle represents a stone, and the square is an annotation on it. In the documented convention, a triangle identifies one stone or group under discussion, while a square identifies an additional one of the same colour. The square does not make it a different kind of playing piece.
Technical board-game notation: a marker for an explanation, rather than an emotional reaction.

- A 2016 Unicode proposal documented this marking convention in English, Japanese and Chinese Go material, including online diagrams, and cited a book example from 1973.
Questions people ask
1Why do I see an empty box instead?
Your font may lack this character. A missing-character box is a display fallback, not the circled square itself. A font that supports the character is needed to show its shape.
