Black Circle

Text and emoji forms

Same symbol, two display styles.

⚫ is the black circle, a solid black dot with no fixed slang meaning, so the words around it decide. People use it as a bullet point or as the dark entry in a row of colored circles for tagging. Officially the medium black circle, it can display as plain text or as emoji art.

What ⚫ means

Unicode's 2008 math guide lists ⚫ among size-graded circles for notation. A 2011 Unicode proposal noted that Wingdings, a Microsoft symbol font, used this dot both as a shape and as a recording control. Unicode still notes ⚫ as a record-function symbol, but that overlap led to a dedicated record symbol, ⏺, which is the clearer choice for a button.

Worth knowing

  • The characters behind ⚫ existed in Unicode 5 years before anyone was allowed to draw them in colour: Unicode 4.1 in 2005, emoji presentation in 2010.
  • ⚫ is a single code point, so it survives copying through almost anything — old databases, SMS gateways, printer drivers.
