What means
GNOME uses CtrlShiftU; Word for Windows uses AltX.
On GNOME or GTK, press CtrlShiftU, type 1CC6C, then press Enter or Space. In Word for Windows, type 1CC6C and press AltX; select only those digits first if they follow other text. As of 2026, Unicode and Microsoft document these routes.
What did the Sharp MZ use this character for?
It was a preset screen graphic.
Sharp's MZ-700, released in 1982, included this glyph in its European alternate display set. The Japanese set instead held hiragana, a Japanese syllabary, and lowercase Latin letters; the European set carried graphics and game sprites. The MZ-700 had no bitmap mode, where programs control individual screen pixels, so programmers used ready-made characters to draw simple pictures cell by cell. Unicode keeps this MZ glyph as a separate character so old text can be converted back and forth without losing it.
