Double Exclamation Mark

Text and emoji forms

Same symbol, two display styles.

‼️, the double exclamation mark (often called bangbang), is strong emphasis: surprise, excitement or hard agreement, not automatic anger. Among friends it cranks up whatever came before; on a request it means “pay attention and act.” It began as a typographic mark for doubled punctuation in vertical writing, later given a colourful emoji look.

What ‼️ means

Usually no: it turns up the volume on the surrounding words. After “we got tickets ‼️” it celebrates; after “why did you do that ‼️” it sharpens the challenge. Casual texters use it as visual volume, while readers raised on conventional punctuation can hear a raised voice. Read the sentence, the relationship and the placement together.

Its roots are typographic. Unicode files ‼ among double punctuation for vertical text (writing that runs top to bottom, as in Japanese) and maps it to two ordinary exclamation marks. As one character, the pair can stand upright as a single unit in a vertical line. The emoji look came later, on top of that old punctuation mark.

Someone sent me ‼️ — what do I do?

Answer the words it's attached to, not the mark. Alone after your news, it's a high-energy “no way”: give them the rest of the story. After a request, do the task or ask what's unclear; another reaction isn't a reply. After an accusation, treat it as the accusation said louder.

Warm-loud in casual chat; in formal messages it can sound like an alarm or a command.

With a boss or unfamiliar reader, put the urgency in words; ‼️ can look like shouting.

What it means when someone sends it to you

4 readings
Alone after your good news
Strong surprise or delight; they're reacting to the news, not asking a new question.
After their own announcement
Emphasis on the headline: they want you to notice and react.
At the end of a work request
Urgency or insistence; act on it rather than treating it as a cheer.
Beside tense or accusatory words
Existing frustration gets louder, so it can land as anger.

Worth knowing

  • The characters behind ‼️ existed in Unicode 8 years before anyone was allowed to draw them in colour: Unicode 3.2 in 2002, emoji presentation in 2010.
  • ‼️ is not one character. It is 2 of them glued together, which is why deleting it sometimes takes two presses of backspace and why it breaks character counters.

Questions people ask

2

Why does ‼️ sometimes show as plain black text?

It lost its emoji switch. ‼️ is a punctuation character plus an invisible selector asking for the colourful style; some fonts and form fields ignore or strip it, leaving a small black ‼. The meaning is unchanged.

Is the iPhone exclamation Tapback the same as typing ‼️?

No. As of 2026, Apple Messages attaches its exclamation Tapback to the message it reacts to; typing ‼️ sends new text in the chat. Both signal emphasis, but only the Tapback is tied to a specific message.
