Right Arrow Curving Down

14/21

⤵️ is a curved arrow that heads right, then dips down. It means 'look below' or 'what you want comes next': a link, a photo, the answer, the rest of the message. It is a pointer, not a mood, so read the words around it for tone.

What ⤵️ means

It points at whatever sits underneath: keep reading, look down.

People put it at the end of a caption or post to steer your eye to the link, the picture or the comments below ('full story ⤵️', 'link in the comments ⤵️'). In a chat it works as a cue that something is on its way: a question followed by ⤵️ often means the answer is coming in the next message, and a lone ⤵️ usually means 'look at what I send next'. Some writers also drop it between paragraphs of a long post as a 'continued below' marker.

The arrow itself is older than emoji. It joined Unicode in 2002 as a plain text symbol, in the batch of characters taken from the Japanese standard JIS X 0213, and Japan's mobile carriers already had a matching picture in their phone emoji sets. When the first worldwide emoji set was built from those carrier symbols, the arrow came along with its upward twin .

A neutral pointer, equally at home in a work announcement and a group chat; it adds direction, not tone.

It isn't the usual sign for falling numbers or a bad day; , or say that more clearly.

Questions people ask

3

Why does ⤵️ show up as a plain black arrow?

It can. The arrow began as a text symbol; an invisible emoji-style selector asks for the colour picture, but an app or font without that drawing still shows a plain arrow.

Does ⤵️ mean sad or depressed?

Usually not; today it mostly points to what follows. In 2008, though, Unicode recorded DoCoMo and au phone users in Japan sending it for a sinking, downcast mood. For sadness is clearer; for a falling trend, or .

Is ⤵️ the same as a reply or thread arrow?

Not quite. Reply is usually . People do put ⤵️ under a post to say 'thread below', but it marks where to look, not that they are replying.
