Clockwise Vertical Arrows

15/21

🔃 is the refresh button as an emoji: two arrows chasing each other clockwise in a circle. People send it to say reload the page, try again, or do the whole thing once more, and next to a song or a routine it means on repeat. It almost never means literally turning something clockwise.

EmojiSince 2010

What 🔃 means

It is the refresh, reload or sync icon you tap in apps.

Two curved arrows, one on the left pointing down and one on the right pointing up, form a circle that runs clockwise. That shape has been the standard button for "load this again" in browsers, mail apps and settings menus since long before emoji existed. The emoji simply lets you drop that button into a sentence.

Because the circle has no beginning or end, the same picture also stands for anything that comes back around: a sync between two devices, a repeated process, a cycle that keeps going. The official name only describes the drawing, which is why people search for it as the refresh, reload or sync emoji rather than by name.

What does 🔃 mean when someone sends it?

Reload, try again, or here we go again.

The most common use is practical: "the page is stuck 🔃", "refresh and it should work", "sync not finished 🔃". It saves typing the word and makes clear you mean the button, not a general complaint.

Off the screen it becomes a shrug about repetition. "Monday 🔃" means the same week starting over; "this song 🔃" means it has been on repeat all day; "new year, new me 🔃" is gently ironic. In planning chats it is an invitation: another round, another attempt, let's run it back.

The tone is neutral to light. Nobody takes offence at 🔃, and the only real mistake is assuming it says something about direction. Unless the conversation is about assembling furniture or tightening a screw, nobody means clockwise.

Neutral and functional, like a button in a sentence; turns mildly ironic when attached to routines.

It is not the recycling symbol; use for environmental messages.

Worth knowing

  • 🔃 and both arrived in Unicode 6.0 in 2010 as part of the big batch of Japanese mobile phone emoji, which already used the two-arrow circle as a reload sign.
  • The clockwise circle became the refresh icon because an analogue clock runs that way: going once around the dial and arriving back where you started.

Questions people ask

4

What is the difference between 🔃 and ?

Direction only. 🔃 runs clockwise, anticlockwise. Both show the refresh circle, and in messages people use them interchangeably to mean reload or try again.

Does 🔃 mean recycling?

No. Recycling is , three folded arrows in a triangle. 🔃 is two arrows in a circle and means refresh or repeat.

Can I use 🔃 to say "on repeat"?

Yes. Next to a song or show it reads as "I keep replaying this". says the same more precisely, since it is the media player's repeat button.

Does 🔃 mean turn something clockwise?

Rarely. It can in instructions about screws or dials, but in everyday chat it means reload, redo or cycle, not a physical turn.
