What ⬇️ means
Through maps, diagrams and logic, long before emoji.
A 1737 French engineering diagram used an arrow for water flow and a waterwheel’s turning. Mid-18th-century German maps marked river flow with arrows; a 1903 English atlas used them for troop movements and migration. In 1922, mathematician David Hilbert used an arrow for logical “implies.” These are milestones for arrows in general, not this emoji’s origin.

1Worth knowing
- The characters behind ⬇️ existed in Unicode 7 years before anyone was allowed to draw them in colour: Unicode 4.0 in 2003, emoji presentation in 2010.
- ⬇️ is not one character. It is 2 of them glued together, which is why deleting it sometimes takes two presses of backspace and why it breaks character counters.
Questions people ask
1Why does ⬇️ look different on other phones?
Every platform draws its own artwork for the same code point. The character you send is identical; Apple, Google, Samsung and WhatsApp each render it in their own style.
