Downwards Arrow With Equilateral Arrowhead

20/162

An editor’s Unicode character search inserts 🠗 as Unicode text; the older Wingdings 3 route depends on that font’s mapping. In a message, it points down, to lower content, or toward downward movement. Its outline can vary by font.

What 🠗 means

Search the editor’s Unicode picker by the arrow’s name.

Wingdings 3 used a font-specific byte 0x90 for this down arrow, so that byte did not reliably represent it after text moved to another font. Before Unicode encoding, some software exposed these symbols through private-use character slots—positions whose meaning depended on a particular font or app—or menus. Unicode encoding made this arrow searchable as a character, though its shape still depends on font coverage.

Lucida’s icon and arrow fonts began the documented design lineage in 1990–91; Microsoft reorganized the set as Wingdings in 1992. These fonts bundled reusable computer and interface symbols, including arrows for pointing and indicating.

What does this arrow mean in a message?

It points down, to something lower, or toward downward movement.

Its meaning comes from direction and placement: it can guide the eye to text underneath, mark a lower option, or signal downward movement. Nearby words tell you which reading fits.

Technical and diagram-like; in casual messages, it reads as deliberate pointing, with nearby text supplying the target.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 🠗 show as a box?

A box is a missing-glyph placeholder: that font or app cannot draw the character. A font with the right Unicode coverage can display it; its outline may still vary between fonts.
