What ‽ means
It gives a question a sharp jolt of surprise, doubt, or excitement. The interrobang is a compact question-and-exclamation mark: one character carries both the question and its emphatic tone.
Advertising executive Martin Speckter proposed the mark in 1962 after seeing copywriters pair question and exclamation marks; he wanted one punctuation mark for the emphatic question. American Type Founders included it in the Americana typeface in 1966, and some Remington Rand typewriters offered it in 1968. The proposal lost mainstream momentum by the late 1960s.
What does ‽ mean in a message?
It can make a question sound playful, skeptical, or accusatory. “You bought another one‽” feels more theatrical than a plain question. If you need a serious question to land clearly, spell out your intent in words.
Playful and theatrical; it signals that one mark is carrying both a question and the writer’s reaction.
As of 2026, avoid it in formal or high-stakes writing; its novelty can look careless.
