heavy circle

Heavy Circle

82/246

⭘ is a plain text circle drawn with a thick outline: a bold ring with no colour. Standards give it two jobs: the "power off" symbol on devices and, on Japanese maps, a town or village office. In a message it is usually just a heavier . It is not the red emoji.

Text symbol

What ⭘ means

Mostly a shape, with two official jobs. On its own ⭘ is a ring, an empty slot or a bullet that stands out more than . It is a text character, not an emoji, so most apps draw it in the colour and size of the surrounding text rather than as a picture.

Its best-known job is on electronics: in the international IEC symbols for equipment, a circle means "off", and Unicode lists ⭘ as that power-off sign. Its partners are (a line, "on") and (the line breaking into the circle, the familiar power button).

You may also know circles from Japan and Korea, where an ordinary circle marks a correct answer or "yes" against a cross . That habit belongs to circles in general; ⭘ is not the usual character for it, though a reader there may well read it that way.

Where does this character come from?

It came from a Japanese broadcasting standard, as a map symbol. Unicode took ⭘ from ARIB STD-B24, Japan's specification for digital broadcasting, among its dictionary and map symbols. Japanese maps draw a town or village office as a single circle and a city office as a double circle, so ⭘ and its sibling (a heavy circle with a circle inside) cover both. Outside Japanese maps that origin is invisible; readers just see a ring.

Neutral and schematic; it reads as a mark, a diagram piece or a power label, not as a chat emoji.

Don't count on ⭘ meaning "OK": outside a circle-and-cross list most readers just see a ring.

Worth knowing

  • The line and circle on power switches come from binary: 1 for on, 0 for off. ⭘ is the zero half of that pair.

Questions people ask

2

Does ⭘ mean zero or the letter O?

No. It is a symbol with no numeric or alphabetic value, a different character from 0 and O. Most search boxes and spellcheckers will not match it to either, so use it only where a symbol is wanted.

Why does ⭘ show as an empty box on my screen?

The font lacks the character. The box is the missing-glyph placeholder, not the symbol; the message still contains ⭘ and will show correctly on a device with a fuller font.
