Purple Circle

In some French posts, 🟣 stands for rape. The link is wordplay: French violet means “purple,” while viol means “rape” and violer “to rape.” In 2024, people discussing sexual violence used the dot in place of the word, partly because they feared posts containing it would be hidden or shown to fewer people. The platforms never confirmed such a rule, and many posts spelling the word out stayed visible.

During 2024 the habit spread through French-speaking TikTok and Instagram discussions of the Pélicot trial in France. In that widely covered case, Dominique Pélicot admitted drugging his wife, Gisèle Pélicot, and inviting other men to rape her; he and dozens of co-defendants were convicted in December 2024. On TikTok, creators also put 🟣 in captions and tags so people searching for the discussion could find it. The pun works only in French, so elsewhere the rape reading needs other clues in the text.

Read it as a colour marker first

In an ordinary message, the purple emoji points at something purple: an outfit, a team colour, a design choice. In a colour-coded list it is a label, and the sender decides what purple stands for: a team, a category, a status, a result. Unicode gives the coloured circles no built-in meaning, so a lone 🟣 with no key is a decorative mark, and the surrounding words tell you the rest.
