What 🟤 means
A plain brown dot: the colour, a marker, or a stand-in for something brown. It belongs to the set of nine coloured circles 🟤 and the matching squares, which exist so that a message can point at a colour without a picture. Brown is the odd one out in that rainbow: it is the colour of earth, wood, coffee, chocolate, most dogs and the most common human eye and hair colours, so 🟤 turns up wherever those are being described.
Three jobs cover almost every use. First, naming a colour: "I'll take the 🟤 one", "eyes 🟤 hair 🟤", a shopping question about a jacket. Second, colour coding: a row of dots marks categories in a schedule, a poll, a bio or a list, and 🟤 is one of the few colours left once the obvious ones are used. Third, a tiny picture: a coffee bean, a cookie, a ball of mud, a planet, or a dog's nose, usually alongside other emoji that make the picture obvious.
On every major platform it is drawn as a flat, dark chocolate-brown disc. Designs differ only slightly in shade and shine, so what you send is what they see, with one catch: on a dim screen it can pass for the black circle .
Someone sent me 🟤. What do they mean?
Read the words next to it; the dot itself is neutral. Alone, 🟤 is almost always a reply to a colour question ("which one?" "🟤") or a vote in a colour poll. In a list it is a bullet or a category tag. Next to food or drink emoji it means chocolate, coffee or caramel.
It does carry a little comedy baggage. Because brown is the colour of , a bare 🟤 after a bad idea or a bad meal can be a dry toilet joke, and some people use it that way on purpose. It is also occasionally used, like the brown heart , as a nod to brown skin or South Asian and Latino identity, which is friendly in the sender's own voice and clumsy if an outsider uses it to describe someone. Neither reading is the default: if there is no joke and no identity talk around it, it is just brown.
Neutral and practical; it has no built-in emotion and fits lists, shopping chats and polls as easily as jokes.
Describing a person as 🟤 can land as a crude skin-colour remark; keep it for objects and your own identity.

6Worth knowing
- Until 2019 emoji had only red, blue, white and black circles. Orange, yellow, green, purple and brown all arrived together in Emoji 12.0, so 🟤 is as old as the rest of the rainbow.
- Its official Unicode name is LARGE BROWN CIRCLE, which is why the shortcode reads :large_brown_circle: even though the emoji keyboard calls it simply "brown circle".
Questions people ask
4Is 🟤 a poop emoji?
Not officially. It is only the colour brown, but people do use it as a deadpan stand-in for , so a bare 🟤 after a gross story is probably a joke.
Why does 🟤 look black on my phone?
It is a dark chocolate brown, and on a dim screen or in dark mode it blends with . Turn the brightness up or zoom in to see the warm tint.
Can I use 🟤 to describe a person's skin?
Carefully. People use 🟤 and for their own brown identity, but a stranger using it to label someone's skin reads as crude. Keep it for things, not people you don't know.
Does 🟤 mean offline or busy?
No. Green, red and yellow dots carry status meanings in some apps; brown has no standard status meaning and is usually just a colour label.
