Black Large Square

17/34

⬛ is the black square emoji: a solid filled box with no face, object or hidden slang behind it. People use it to mean the colour black, to build pixel-style emoji art, to blank something out, or as one tile in a shared Wordle score, where it marks a letter that isn't in the answer. On its own it is almost never an insult.

What ⬛ means

A building block: colour swatch, blank tile, or one pixel of emoji art. It belongs to the geometric shapes group alongside circles, triangles and coloured squares. It came to phones with the first emoji sets in 2010 as a plain black and white pair (⬛ and ), years before the red, yellow, green and blue squares existed, which is why it still does so much of the grid work online. People line squares up in rows to draw chessboards, QR-style patterns, pixel hearts and flags, use a single one as 'the black option' when choosing colours, and drop one in place of a word they are pretending to censor.

Its most famous job is the daily Wordle share. Wordle is a word-guessing game played by millions: you have six tries at a five-letter word, and each guess is coloured green (right letter, right spot), yellow (right letter, wrong spot) or grey (not in the word). When you share your result, the game converts the grid into emoji so nobody sees your letters, only your luck. As of 2026 a player on the dark theme gets ⬛ for every grey tile, so a row like ⬛⬛⬛ means 'two letters found, three misses'. Players on the light theme share instead; it means exactly the same thing. Spin-off games (number, music, film and geography versions) copied the same convention.

What does it mean when someone sends only ⬛?

Usually nothing emotional: a placeholder, a colour, or a thumb slip. The black square has no established hidden meaning in chat. A lone one most often means the sender was choosing a colour, replying to a 'which one?' question, testing whether emoji display, or caught the wrong key next to the squares they wanted. Some people use it as a deliberate blank, a 'no comment' or a redacted word, and a run of them under a photo is almost always decorative art, a border or a mock censor bar.

If it arrives instead of an answer to something that mattered, ask rather than decode. Reading a black square as coldness, mourning or anger says more about the mood you were already in than about the sender. The one notable exception was the summer of 2020, when plain black squares filled social feeds as a protest gesture (see the FAQ), and that was a dated, public use rather than a private message.

Neutral and graphic. It carries no feeling of its own; any tone comes from the words and squares around it.

Don't read a lone ⬛ as hostility or sulking; ask what was meant.

Worth knowing

  • 'Black' and 'white' in the official names are printing terms for filled and hollow, not colours. That is why there is no 'grey square' emoji: Wordle borrowed the filled black one for its grey tiles.
  • Before the coloured squares arrived in 2019, ⬛ and were the only large square emoji, so a decade of emoji art, borders and 'loading bars' was built from just these two.

Questions people ask

4

Does ⬛ mean something bad or offensive?

No. It has no established insult, gang, political or sexual meaning. In a Wordle share it marks a missed letter; elsewhere it is a colour, a blank or decoration.

Why does my Wordle result show ⬛ but my friend's shows ?

Theme. Dark-theme players share grey tiles as ⬛, light-theme players as . Both mean a letter not in the answer. Players using the colour-blind setting get and instead of green and yellow.

What did the black squares on Instagram mean?

On 2 June 2020, 'Blackout Tuesday', millions posted a plain black square image to signal support for Black Lives Matter protests after George Floyd's death, often with ⬛ in the caption. It was a one-day gesture, not a lasting meaning for the emoji.

Why do I see an empty box instead of a black square?

Your device's font is missing the character, so it shows a placeholder outline. The sender most likely sent a filled ⬛ or another emoji your system can't draw; updating the phone or app usually fixes it.
