What ▮ means
Context gives ▮ its job. In a chart, it is a histogram marker; at a proof’s end it can signal completion, and at an article’s end a solid block can act as an editorial end mark. A casual message without those cues leaves the sender’s intent unclear.
The mathematical end mark has a history separate from this exact Unicode character. In Measure Theory (1950), mathematician Paul Halmos used a solid black square or rectangle instead of writing “Q.E.D.” (“that which was to be demonstrated”); he adapted the convention from magazine end marks, small typographic shapes used to close articles.
A context-dependent chart, mathematical, or editorial mark.
Do not read it as “done” in chat just because it can close a proof.

2Questions people ask
2Does ▮ stand for a number?
No. It is a marker, not a numeric value; use the chart’s legend or label to see what its bar represents.
Why does ▮ look different in different fonts?
No single outline is required: the character has an identity, while each font sets its proportions, weight, and alignment.
