What does the circled triangle mean?
In Go, it marks the stone or group under discussion. A Go diagram shows stones on the board; this Go marker singles out one stone or connected group for commentary. When another stone or group of the same colour also needs a mark, the notation uses a square.
The earliest surviving Go diagrams, from the 12th through 14th centuries, used numbered tags. Triangle-and-square markers appear in Go books from the 1970s, and English, Japanese, and Chinese sources document the same role.
