heavy white square

Heavy White Square

🞑 is a thick outlined square used as a typographic shape. Its trail runs through the numbered
box5
design in Wingdings 2, one of the fonts built to supply reusable computer symbols. If a blank fallback box appears in its place, the font cannot draw this character.

What 🞑 means

It denotes a square shape; context can give it a job.

In Wingdings 2, the heavy white square was the numbered box5 design. Lucida’s dingbat designs—decorative symbol glyphs—date to 1990–91, and Microsoft released Wingdings in 1992. These fonts supplied reusable computer symbols such as interface icons, bullets, ornaments, and geometric shapes.

Unicode groups it with geometric drawings from the symbol fonts Webdings and Wingdings, including a run of white squares with increasingly heavy outlines and the plain white square □. As of 2026, 🞑 has no standard chat convention; read it as a shape unless nearby words give it another role.

Why does heavy white square show as a blank box?

A blank fallback box means the font cannot draw 🞑.

The selected font and app need a glyph for 🞑. When that support is missing, Unicode’s display guidance says the character may appear as a white box, a question-mark box, or another fallback mark.

Two documents can therefore show different outlines: the character stays the same, but each font draws it differently.

Neutral and typographic: it reads as a shape, an outline weight, or an ornament.

Alone, it can look like a missing glyph or empty square; add words when its role matters.
