What ◻️ means
A medium-sized hollow square from Unicode's set of basic geometric shapes. It belongs to a family of plain shapes that existed as text symbols long before emoji and were promoted to emoji in 2010, alongside the rest of the Japanese mobile-phone pictures, so that old phone messages would keep their squares, circles and diamonds intact.
The emoji keyboard has four white squares graded by size: small, medium-small, ◻️ medium and large. Each has a black partner of the same size; this one's is . The sizes once mattered on tiny phone screens where a square could be a bullet, a box or a block; today most people pick whichever looks right in the message.
The word "white" in its name means hollow or unfilled, not the colour of the paint. That is why many platforms draw ◻️ as a light grey or off-white square with a visible edge rather than pure white: a truly white square would vanish on a white chat background. In dark mode it usually stands out clearly.
Does ◻️ mean anything when someone sends it?
No. It does a layout job, not an emotional one. Look at what sits next to it. In front of tasks or shopping items it is an unticked box: "◻️ milk ◻️ bread" means still to do, and some people replace each box with as things get done. In a menu, a bio or an announcement it is a neat bullet point. Lined up with coloured squares it becomes a pixel in a small picture or a border.
A row of them on their own usually marks empty slots: places in a line-up still to be filled, steps not yet reached, or simply a decorative divider. If a lone ◻️ arrives with no words, it is more likely a stray tap or a placeholder than a message in code; asking costs nothing.
Neutral and practical. It reads as tidy formatting, not as a mood or a reaction.
Readers may think your message is broken; if the square carries meaning, put a word beside it.

6Worth knowing
- Font designers call the empty box that stands in for a missing character "tofu", after the white block of bean curd. Google's Noto fonts take their name from the goal of "no tofu".
- In formal logic the same hollow square means "necessarily" or "always", which is why Unicode lists "always (modal operator)" as one of this character's alternative names.
Questions people ask
4Is ◻️ a broken character?
No. It is a real emoji. A character your phone can't draw shows as an empty box, sometimes with a question mark or code inside, exactly where a letter or emoji should be; ◻️ sits where the sender put it on purpose.
Why does it sometimes look smaller or plain?
It is being shown as text. Without the invisible marker that asks for emoji-style display, some apps and fonts render the same square as a thin outlined text symbol, like .
Is there a way to tick ◻️?
Not in place. Emoji don't change state, so people replace the box with or when a task is done. In a document, use the text checkboxes and instead.
Why do some phones show it grey instead of white?
Because "white" here means unfilled, not the colour. A pure white square would disappear on a light background, so most platforms draw it pale grey with a darker edge.
