What ◫ means
A small drawing of one box divided into two halves.
It belongs to Unicode's Geometric Shapes block, a set of plain squares, circles and triangles encoded for typesetting and diagrams. Its neighbours are the empty square and the half-filled squares and ; ◫ is the outline version with both halves left white.
Read its parts and you have its usual job: one frame, two equal compartments. In menus, notes and diagrams it stands for a split view, a two-column layout or two things compared side by side. The words next to it settle which.
Why do I see an empty box instead?
Your font draws it, and some fonts don't include it.
Because ◫ is a text character, its look comes from whatever font your app uses: the line may be thicker or thinner and the square taller or wider. If no installed font has it, you get a blank box or a box with a question mark. That is a missing glyph, not a different symbol.

3Questions people ask
2Is ◫ an emoji?
No. It's an ordinary text symbol with no emoji version, so it takes your font and text colour.
Is ◫ the same as ?
No. They look nearly alike, but they are separate characters, so searching for one won't find the other. Pick ◫ for general text.

◫\25EBWhy is ◫ a box on my screen?
fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
Codes and encoding1 code points
