Search for Light White Square or U+1F78E in a Unicode-aware picker. In HTML, use 🞎; in a CSS string or pseudo-element, use \1F78E.
What does this square mean?
It is a thin square outline with a light border.
“Light” describes the border’s line weight. Unicode groups 🞎 with the ordinary white square, , and five other white-square variants; their names mark the progression from light to heavier outlines. Use this one when that lighter edge is the design you need.
Unicode identifies these extended geometric shapes as originating in Webdings and Wingdings collections. The original Wingdings fonts appeared with Windows 3.1 in 1992; Webdings was designed in 1997. A 2011 Unicode proposal argued that standard character assignments would make such symbols searchable and interoperable across systems.
Why does it render differently?
The font supplies the outline.
A font with 🞎 can show its thin border; fallback to another font can change the weight or show a missing-character box. If the weight must match across a document or interface, use a font that includes the character and check it in the viewing app.
A typographic shape choice: the thin outline is its main distinction.

3Questions people ask
1Why does 🞎 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
