What 秋 means
秋 means autumn and harvest. Mandarin qiū sounds roughly like “chyo” on a high, steady tone. Japanese reads あき (aki) alone and しゅう (shū) in compounds; Korean uses 가을 for everyday autumn and 秋 in 秋收 (“autumn harvest”).
Oracle-bone inscriptions show an insect-like form, sometimes with fire; later forms add 禾, the grain sign. Early forms are associated with harvest and ripening crops, but the exact image is uncertain. 龝 is an older variant.
As of 2026, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean font conventions can draw 秋 with different strokes; the encoded character remains the same.

Questions people ask
1Why does 秋 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
