🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

flag: Wales

The Welsh flag emoji represents Wales, one of the four countries of the United Kingdom. Use it for Welsh identity, the Welsh language, travel or support for Wales in rugby and football. Its picture is a red dragon on white and green; if you see a black flag instead, the emoji may not be displaying correctly.

What 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 means

It represents Wales, its people and their national identity.

Wales lies west of England and is called Cymru in Welsh. Its flag shows a red dragon on two horizontal bands, white above green. The dragon is a longstanding national emblem; its Welsh name, Y Ddraig Goch, means “the red dragon”. The flag in its current form was officially adopted in 1959, but the dragon is far older.

In a message, the flag can mark a connection to Wales: home, family roots, a trip to Cardiff or a post in Welsh. It also fits support for Welsh national teams and celebrations of St David’s Day, Wales’s national day on 1 March. The surrounding words usually hint at which connection the sender means.

Why does it appear as a black flag?

Your app or font may not support the complete emoji.

The emoji combines a black flag with invisible characters called tags that identify Wales. Software that cannot display the complete sequence may show only the black flag. That does not necessarily mean the sender chose a black flag.

Try viewing the message in another app or browser. If the distinction matters, write “Wales” alongside the flag so the meaning survives a display problem.

A straightforward national symbol; it can express belonging, pride or sporting support.

Wales and England are different countries within the UK; their flags are not interchangeable.
