Dinosaur emoji: 🦖 T-rex and 🦕 sauropod
There are exactly two dinosaurs in the emoji set, both added in Unicode 10.0 / Emoji 5.0 in 2017. T-Rex is the carnivore: upright, big head, tiny arms, usually drawn green with its mouth open mid-roar. Sauropod is the long-necked plant eater, the shape most people call a brontosaurus or brachiosaurus. Its colour is not fixed: platforms draw it blue, grey or green, which is why people search for the “blue dinosaur emoji” and mean .
In chat is energy: a roar, a kid obsessed with dinosaurs, a Jurassic Park reference, the “T-rex can’t reach” joke about short arms, or the old cute-speak rawr, which forum users have glossed as “I love you in dinosaur” since at least the mid-2010s. is softer and slower, and it carries the other sense of the word: calling someone or something a dinosaur means old-fashioned and out of touch, so next to a flip phone or a fax machine is a gentle tease. mammoth and dodo (both Emoji 13.0, 2020) complete the extinct club.
Platforms name them :t_rex: and :sauropod:; typing either on Discord or Slack brings the emoji up, and on an iPhone or Android keyboard searching “dinosaur” or “t-rex” finds both. There is no dinosaur in plain text, but the word itself is a fossil of language: Richard Owen coined Dinosauria in 1842 from Greek for “terrible lizard”, and Japanese 恐竜 and Chinese 恐龙 translate it as “terrible dragon”, with the dragon characters 竜 and 龙 you can copy from the grid.
Reptile emoji and what they mean:
The four living reptiles arrived in two waves. crocodile, turtle and snake were in Unicode 6.0 (2010), carried over from the Japanese phone sets; lizard only came with Unicode 9.0 in 2016. frog is an amphibian, not a reptile, but it shares the swamp with the crocodile and most people look for it here, so it sits with them.
Snake is the one with the sharpest slang: a snake is a fake friend, a backstabber, someone who talks behind your back, and a string of under a post is an accusation. It is also Slytherin to Harry Potter fans and, together with , one of the twelve Chinese zodiac animals; the Year of the Snake began on 29 January 2025. Crocodile doubles as an alligator and gives us “crocodile tears”, fake sorrow, written . Turtle means slow: a slow reply, a slow day, “slow and steady wins the race”; in East Asia the turtle is also a sign of long life, which is why 龜 and 亀 appear on temple carvings. Lizard is a gecko or iguana depending on the platform; online it turns up in “lizard brain” jokes about acting on instinct and in the “reptilian” conspiracy memes.
The reptile characters in the grid are the Chinese and Japanese words themselves: 蛇 snake, 龜 and 亀 turtle (traditional and Japanese forms), 蜥 lizard, 鱷 and 鳄 crocodile (traditional and simplified), 蛙 frog. is Ophiuchus, the serpent bearer, the one constellation sign with a snake in it, drawn as a figure holding a serpent and used by people who follow the thirteen-sign zodiac.
Dragon emoji: and and the dragon in text
Dragons are reptiles in everyone’s imagination and Unicode files them in the same block, so they belong here. Dragon is the full serpentine body, drawn as the Chinese lóng with whiskers and no wings on most platforms. Dragon Face is the head only, a sticker-sized version that works as a reaction. Use for the Year of the Dragon, for Dragon Boat Festival and for fantasy in general; when you want the character to look you in the eye.
If emoji are not an option, the dragon survives in plain text as a character: 龍 is the traditional Chinese dragon, 龙 the simplified form used in mainland China, and 竜 the Japanese shinjitai form seen in 恐竜 (dinosaur) and in names. Two flags carry a dragon in full: Wales with its red dragon, Y Ddraig Goch, and Bhutan, the “Land of the Thunder Dragon”, whose white dragon holds jewels in its claws. For unicorns, phoenixes and other creatures see the Fantasy & Mythical Creature Emoji collection.
Fossils, eggs and the dig:
A dinosaur story in emoji needs more than the animals. bone (Emoji 11.0, 2018) is the fossil, the skull in the museum, a fossil tooth, a shell for the ammonites that fossil hunters actually find most. and stand for trackways, for the dig and the lab, for the dinosaur DNA that Jurassic Park built a franchise on and real science has never recovered, and for the natural history museum. The Chinese characters 骨 (bone) and 卵 (egg) are in the grid for anyone who wants the words rather than the pictures.
Eggs come as egg and nest with eggs (Emoji 15.0, 2022), and hatching chick is the closest thing to a baby dinosaur breaking out of its shell. and are there on purpose: birds are living dinosaurs, descended from feathered theropods, and molecular studies place chickens among the closest living relatives of Tyrannosaurus rex. Crocodiles, in turn, are the birds’ nearest living cousins, so the whole first half of this grid is one family.
The prehistoric world:
Scenery makes a combo read as prehistoric rather than as a zoo. volcano is the classic backdrop, with rock, desert, palm tree, ferns and leaves, trees and cactus for the reptile habitats of today. meat on bone feeds the carnivore, leafy green the sauropod. comet and shooting star are the asteroid that ended the Cretaceous 66 million years ago, usually followed by and or , and hourglass says “millions of years ago” in one character.
For the living animals’ neighbours, Animal Emoji has the whole zoo, Ocean & Sea Emoji the sea turtles’ world, and Fire Emoji & Flame Symbols every flame; the eco side of extinction, and the recycling signs, lives in Earth, Eco & Recycling Symbols.
