What ⛎ means
A real constellation, yes; a sign in standard horoscopes, no. Ophiuchus (pronounced oh-fee-YOO-kus, Greek for "serpent holder") is one of the 88 constellations astronomers recognise. It shows a man gripping a snake, and it sits between Scorpius and Sagittarius, right on the Sun's yearly path across the sky. Seen from Earth, the Sun passes in front of its stars for about three weeks each year, roughly 30 November to 17 December.
The twelve horoscope signs are something else. Western astrology divides the Sun's path into twelve equal slices of 30 degrees, named after constellations more than two thousand years ago. Those slices have drifted away from the star patterns since then and were never meant to match the uneven, overlapping shapes astronomers later fenced off (the modern constellation borders were only fixed in 1930). So when a December horoscope says Sagittarius, it means a slice of the sky, not the stars behind the Sun that day. Ophiuchus-inclusive astrology is a minority system that sets the slices by the constellations instead and squeezes a thirteenth sign in between Scorpio and Sagittarius.
The ⛎ symbol itself is modern. The twelve classic signs have had their glyphs for centuries; this one was drawn for 13-sign astrology, usually as a U-shaped figure with a wavy snake-like line across it. It arrived in Unicode because 13-sign horoscopes were a craze in Japan and the Japanese phone carriers had already given it an emoji, so it was carried over alongside the other zodiac emoji.
What does it mean when someone sends ⛎?
Usually "my sign is Ophiuchus", said with a wink. People born in early December use it to opt out of being a Sagittarius, or simply to enjoy belonging to the sign that nobody's horoscope column prints. It carries the same light, playful tone as any other zodiac emoji in a bio or a birthday message.
In a group chat it is often a conversation starter rather than a declaration: someone has just read that the zodiac "changed" and wants to know what sign everyone would be now. In astrology fandom it can also be a mild provocation, since many astrologers regard the 13-sign idea as a misunderstanding of how signs work. Read the words around it before deciding whether the sender is serious, joking, or trolling.
Why does the "zodiac has changed" story keep coming back?
Because the same misunderstanding gets rediscovered every few years. The 13-sign idea goes back to the astrologer Stephen Schmidt in 1970 and was popularised by Walter Berg's 1995 book The 13 Signs of the Zodiac, which did especially well in Japan. In 2011 remarks by a Minnesota astronomer about the drift of the signs went viral as "your sign has changed". In 2016 a NASA page for children explaining that the Sun crosses thirteen constellations was reported as NASA "adding a sign", and the story resurfaced again in 2020, when NASA publicly replied that it studies astronomy, not astrology, and had not changed the zodiac.
Each round ends the same way: astronomers point out that constellations and signs are different things, astrologers point out that their system never depended on the constellations, and everyone keeps their old sign. ⛎ is the souvenir of that argument.
Light and playful, like any zodiac emoji, but cryptic to anyone who has never heard of the 13-sign debate; spell out Ophiuchus for them.
Don't send it to tell someone their sign has changed as if it were news; nothing in standard astrology has changed.

7Worth knowing
- The snake Ophiuchus holds is a constellation of its own, Serpens, the only one of the 88 split into two separate pieces: the head on one side of the man and the tail on the other.
- In Japan a thirteen-sign horoscope boom in the 1990s made Ophiuchus a household name, which is why its symbol ended up on Japanese phones and then in Unicode.
Questions people ask
4What are the Ophiuchus dates?
Roughly 30 November to 17 December, the weeks when the Sun is in front of the constellation. Exact dates vary by a day or two between 13-sign systems. In standard astrology those days remain Sagittarius.
Did NASA add Ophiuchus to the zodiac?
No. NASA explained that the Sun passes through thirteen constellations and that the ancient Babylonians chose twelve; it has said plainly that it does not do astrology and did not change the zodiac.
Is my sign different now?
No. Western horoscopes use twelve equal divisions of the Sun's path, not the constellations, so nothing about your sign changes unless you deliberately switch to a 13-sign system.
Why does ⛎ show as an empty box?
The font lacks it. The twelve classic zodiac symbols are in almost every font, but Ophiuchus was added much later and some older or minimal fonts skip it. Phones and modern browsers display it fine.
