What ๐ธ means
It began as a phone pictograph and stayed mostly literal. The frog was part of Japanese mobile-carrier emoji sets, listed in a Google mapping table by 2008. Unicode encoded that set so messages stopped losing characters between phones. Its Unicode character name is FROG FACE, and many designs show just a green frog face rather than the whole animal.
Its social life moved around. A study of Twitter posts from 2012โ2018 found words near ๐ธ shifting from animal terms to Kermit and "none of my business" in 2014, toward abusive and Pepe-related terms from 2015, then back to tea and gossip by 2017.
Is the frog emoji Pepe?
No, but context can make it stand in for him. Pepe is a cartoon frog from Matt Furie's online comic Boy's Club, first drawn in 2005. The Anti-Defamation League, a US anti-hate group, listed Pepe as a hate symbol in 2016 after bigoted versions spread, while stressing that context matters. In 2017, reporters found frog emoji used as a Pepe cue in far-right event chatter. A lone ๐ธ signals none of that.
Playful and literal in everyday chat; meme and political readings need supporting context.
Don't aim it at a French person: in British English slang, "frog" is an offensive slur.

Questions people ask
2Is there a toad emoji?
No. As of 2026, ๐ธ is the only amphibian emoji, so it doubles for toads and tree frogs.
Why did Facebook's frog emoji look like Kermit?
Artwork choice. Facebook's 2014 drawing resembled Kermit, the Muppets' puppet frog, but it was the same generic frog emoji, not a Kermit character.
