What ๐ means
A cat gasping in shock, usually for comic effect.
๐ belongs to a set of nine cat faces that mirror the yellow human faces: a grinning cat, a cat with tears of joy, a cat with heart-eyes and so on. Each cat means roughly what its human twin means, only cuter and less serious. This one is the alarmed cat. On most major platforms (as of 2026) it has huge eyes, an open mouth and both paws pressed to its cheeks, a pose borrowed straight from . People use it the way they use , with the dial turned slightly down: โthe exam is tomorrow ๐โ, โdid you see the price of that ๐โ, โmy cat knocked the plant over again ๐โ.
Its name is the odd part. In the 2009 proposal that brought Japanese mobile-carrier emoji into Unicode, this cat was the โanguished cat faceโ, paired with the human . By release it had become weary cat, echoing , and Unicode's own notes describe tiredness rather than horror. The drawings never followed: they kept the scream, and the everyday shortcode scream_cat follows the drawings. So the character officially means tired and visually means terrified, and in practice the picture wins. If you mean โI'm worn outโ, add the words.
What does it mean when someone sends you ๐?
Mock horror, or real alarm delivered with a smile.
Read the message around it. After genuinely bad or startling news it is sincere surprise, perhaps worry, softened by the cat so it doesn't feel heavy. After something trivial (a long queue, a spoiler, a typo in a group name) it is theatre: the sender is making a small problem enormous because that is funny. Between friends it often means nothing more than โwowโ. It almost never signals anger, and it is rarely an insult; if anything, choosing the cat over the human face shows the sender is being playful.
Casual and dramatic; comfortable between friends, odd in formal messages. Playful by default but can carry sincere alarm.
Alone, it reads as scared or shocked, not tired, whatever its name says.

5Worth knowing
- The nine cat faces came into Unicode in 2010 from Japanese mobile-carrier emoji; this one traces to the KDDI (au) set, each cat a feline twin of a human expression.
- The paws-on-cheeks pose copies , whose design in turn echoes Edvard Munch's painting The Scream, so this cat is a second-hand homage to a famous artwork.
Questions people ask
4Why is it called weary cat when it looks scared?
Because the name follows Unicode, not the drawing. It was first proposed as an anguished cat, then renamed after Weary Face. Platforms drew a startled, scream-like cat anyway, and the picture is what people read.
Is ๐ the same as ?
Nearly. Both show the same shocked pose, but is the serious scream and ๐ is the playful one. Choose the cat when you want the gasp with a wink.
Is sending ๐ rude?
No. It is a lighthearted reaction. The only risk is tone: after serious news, some readers may find a cat joke too flippant, so pair it with a few sincere words.
Can I use ๐ to say I'm tired?
You can, but add the words. Despite its official name, almost everyone will read a bare ๐ as shocked or scared, not exhausted; or say tired more clearly.
