What ๐ means
A bashful "I can't look" โ embarrassment played for cute. Someone said something nice, or did something mildly mortifying, and the monkey covering its eyes hides on their behalf. It also covers the cringe of a hard-to-watch clip or a friend's doomed plan.
The proverb lives in the complete set. Solo, this monkey is a blush; only ๐ together bring back "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil".
What does it mean when someone sends ๐?
They're a little embarrassed and want you to see it. Covering your eyes at your own phone hides nothing โ ๐ is typed so you watch the blush happen. That makes it warm by default.
After your compliment it usually reads as pleased, not deflecting. Taking it as a polite no is the common mistake, though the rest of the chat still has the final say.
Where do the three monkeys come from?
From Japan, where the carved trio goes back centuries. Their names are Mizaru ("see not"), Kikazaru ("hear not") and Iwazaru ("speak not"): -zaru is a classical Japanese negative ending that sounds like saru, "monkey", so the names are a pun. A stone monument in Ise linked to Kลshin, a folk religious observance, shows the trio with an inscription dated 1440.
The best-known version is a 17th century carving on the sacred-horse stable at Nikkล's Tลshล-gลซ shrine, where monkeys were thought to protect horses and the panel taught children to avoid bad sights, sounds and words. In English the saying also bends toward "looking the other way" at wrongdoing, so the trio can sound ironic.
The idea itself is older than the carvings. The Analects, the recorded sayings of the Chinese teacher Confucius, advises not to look at, listen to or speak anything improper. It's a close parallel, though a direct line to the Japanese monkeys isn't proven.
Playful and warm in private chats. In work chat it shrinks your mistake to giggle size โ fine for a typo, wrong for anything needing a real apology.
๐ answering your compliment is rarely a soft no. Usually it's the opposite: pleased, and letting you see it.

Questions people ask
3Is ๐ flirty?
It can be. Alone it's plain embarrassment; stacked with or answering a compliment it leans flirty. The emoji can't prove interest by itself โ the rest of the chat decides.
What does ๐ mean from a girl?
The same bashfulness as from anyone โ gender adds nothing here. Look at what it's attached to: her own joke, your message, or a confession.
Can ๐ mean deliberately ignoring something?
Yes โ in self-aware confessions. "Haven't checked my bank balance ๐" means choosing not to look. It's aimed at the sender's own avoidance, not at you.
