Speak-No-Evil Monkey

3/3

๐Ÿ™Š, the monkey covering its mouth, usually means โ€œmy lips are sealedโ€ or โ€œoops, I said too much.โ€ In chat it keeps gossip secret or laughs off an overshare. Paired with and , it completes the three wise monkeys saying, which in English can accuse someone of ignoring wrongdoing.

What ๐Ÿ™Š means

Your secret's safe โ€” or they just said too much.

After you share something private, it's a zip-the-lips promise: they're not repeating it. Right after their own message, it flags something too honest, flirty or messy โ€” a hand slapped over the mouth, โ€œdid I just say that?โ€

Where do the three wise monkeys come from?

A Japanese shrine carving that taught restraint.

The best-known version is carved over the sacred horse stable at Nikkล Tลshล-gลซ, a shrine in Japan whose rebuilding was completed in 1636. Monkeys were believed to protect horses, and the panel teaches children not to see, hear or say bad things. The names pun in Japanese: -zaru means โ€œnotโ€ and echoes saru, โ€œmonkey,โ€ so this one is iwazaru, โ€œspeaks not.โ€

A similar rule appears earlier in the Analects, the collected teachings of Confucius, though that doesn't prove the monkeys came from China. An 1894 travel guide to Japan described three-monkey stone reliefs as roadside devotional objects of Kลshin, a folk observance held on recurring โ€œmonkey days.โ€ In English the saying often describes people who ignore wrongdoing; in a 1940 radio talk, President Franklin D. Roosevelt echoed โ€œsee no evil and hear no evilโ€ against those who wanted the war's dangers left unexplained.

Playful and conspiratorial in chat; dropped into a serious talk about wrongdoing, it reads as flippant.

Never use it to compare a Black person to a monkey; that echoes racist abuse.

Shh, sworn to secrecy.
Oops, that slipped out, and I'm laughing.

Worth knowing

  • Mahatma Gandhi kept a small three-monkey statuette as a moral reminder; a three-monkey figure is shown among objects at his museum in Ahmedabad, India.

Questions people ask

2

Does ๐Ÿ™Š mean something sexual?

No. It's about secrecy; after a flirty or dirty line it just means โ€œoops, I said it.โ€ The spice is in the text, not the monkey.

Is ๐Ÿ™Š flirty?

It can be. After a compliment or a bold admission it adds a bashful, giggly cover-up; after gossip it's simply conspiratorial.
