What ᥄ means
It marks an emphatic ending in Limbu writing.
It closes an emphatic phrase or sentence. The Limbu words around it carry the actual emotion; ᥄ alone does not distinguish delight, anger, or alarm.
Limbu writing also uses the Devanagari double danda (॥), a paired ending mark, for many ordinary sentence endings. In publications combining Limbu and Devanagari text, ᥄ keeps Limbu punctuation distinct from the ordinary Latin !.
When did Limbu writing take shape?
The earliest record may be an alphabet book.
An alphabet book is tentatively dated to the early 18th century. The oldest known written Limbu materials were collected in the 1850s; the earlier book's date remains tentative.
The modern revival began in Kalimpong in 1925 to make the Limbu language, literature, teaching materials, and Mundhum ritual narratives writable. Mundhum is the Limbu ritual tradition. Writing its orally transmitted narratives as sacred texts is called scripturalisation.
Limbu is a Brahmic script, part of a broad family of South Asian writing systems, and is described as closely related to Lepcha, another Himalayan script. In 2003, dedicated Limbu punctuation was described as relatively new and uncommon in the texts reviewed. In Sikkim, a Himalayan region, Limbu typography has distinctive forms.
This is text punctuation; its emphasis depends on the phrase it ends.
By itself, ᥄ cannot tell you which emotion the writer means.
