What 🤔 means
It means “hmm”: thinking, uncertainty, or doubt. Placement decides the tone. After your own question or plan — “pizza or tacos 🤔” — it's honest deliberation and invites an answer. After another person's claim, it shifts to “I'm not convinced” or “walk me through that.”
The idea predates the emoji. In 2008 a Google document mapping Japanese mobile-carrier emoji listed a “THINKING” face for thinking and pondering. A 2014 Unicode compatibility proposal added THINKING FACE so symbols from existing systems such as Gmail could travel between apps, sketching a hand-on-chin design with a thought-bubble alternative.
Why did they send only 🤔?
Usually they're questioning your last message. A stand-alone reply evaluates what came before: read it as “does that add up?” and answer the doubtful point — the detail, the reason — rather than asking what the emoji meant. If it answers a question you asked, they're just still deciding.
Its tone also travels badly between languages. A 2026 study of English- and Turkish-language posts on X found that the emotion words appearing around 🤔 differed sharply between the two; the authors suspect ironic, context-dependent use. With an international audience, add words when the tone matters.
Is 🤔 rude?
It can be, when it targets someone else's words. After an excuse, boast, or firm claim, it performs a silent “really?” Among friends that's playful teasing; under a colleague's proposal in a work chat it reads as public skepticism. Write the question you want answered instead.
Safe beside your own musing, loaded as a reply: the fewer words around it, the more skeptical it reads.
A bare 🤔 after someone's claim reads as “I don't buy it.”
Drift: By late 2016 the face was being discussed as a meme, and sarcastic replies stretched literal pondering into a compact reaction to dubious claims.

3Worth knowing
- Discord communities warped this face into “thonk” custom emotes — stretched, melted, deep-fried — starting around 2017. A distorted thinking face is 🤔 dialled up to ironic fake contemplation.
- “Really makes you think 🤔” is a mid-2010s caption formula mocking shallow hot takes. When the caption sounds too earnest, the 🤔 is the sarcasm marker.
