Tetragram for Doubt

𝍃 is the Tai Xuan Jing figure “Doubt”: uncertainty amid change, not simply “I’m unsure.” Yang Xiong’s Chinese text joined divination (reading signs for guidance) with philosophy. Song dynasty Confucian scholars later left his work out of their essential texts.

What 𝍃 means

It frames doubt as conflict within a situation.

The opening gloss says yin and yang—opposing forces—grind against each other; things split into “as if so, as if not.” It describes tension in circumstances, not a judgment about the reader.

How is it related to the I Ching?

It reworks the I Ching through a different line system.

Yang Xiong completed the text around 2 BCE. Its figures use four positions and three line types tied to heaven, earth and people; a poetic image and short judgments develop each reading. Fan Wang, a later Chinese scholar, arranged the earliest surviving version in the Jin dynasty.

Why does 𝍃 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
