What ➚ means
From technical diagrams, then printers' decorative dingbats.
In 1737 the engineer Bernard Forest de Bélidor drew an arrow in a hydraulics diagram to show water flow and a waterwheel turning. During the nineteenth century, arrows dropped their feathered tails and became plain marks for instructions, logic and page design.
➚ belongs to the dingbat tradition: pointer and ornament symbols set alongside type. Nearby words decide its reading: a figure going up, "head this way", or "look here".

Because your font draws it. Stroke weight, angle and tail details vary between typefaces; the character and its up-right direction stay the same.
